I was just discussing the "redheads as evil" theme last night (and I hadn't even peeked at this post!) Did you know "Hag" is one of my favorite insults? It's cutting, to the point, and so visual.
Digging out all these covers has inspired me: I'm writing a Gothic Novella (a.k.a in todays parlance Paranormal eBook) and the villainess has red hair: a real hennaed old hag.
I think because many cultures considered red hair a sign of sorcery and witchcraft. What we now know is just a low occurrence of phenotype must of been pretty scary back then. Thanks Mendel. Red heads were burned just cause of hair color in the Middle Ages. But I really started believing in their inherent evilness when I learned about Gingervitus on South Park. It is said that gingers have no soul and if Matt and Trey say so, I believe it!!! ;)
i do LOVE the name of that book.
Chin! Now stop! Although I'm right there with you on ripping out Augusten Burroughs' jugular (oh wait, does that make me an evil ginger?) ... don't fall for it! We are not all bad, I swear.
I tried this little litmus test once when I lived in NY. When I dyed my hair from blonde to red, I noticed that men stopped opening doors for me, and the type of sexual harassment on the street got much nastier. And you wonder why we're so damned upset all of the time.
Chin Lee 3! I love your blue octopuses! Your mission is a noble one!
Thanks!! When I have my minions take me shopping I always pick out, I mean RESCUE, blue octopus. No matter what silly little bauble gets dangled in front of me. I think they are so elegant and chic, you know, like a gorgeous redhead or a triple strand of pearls.
Well, google Julia Gillard (new Australian PM) and you'll see a redhead. Whether she's the devil's plaything is another matter (she's an avowed atheist).
May I suggest that the next time the cousre is offered that there be a lesson in Place names? The places that hold the mystery are almost always "Somethingwycks"
I've enjoyed it.
Now for a little Florence King.
I for one LOVE redheads. Of course I schwing for redheaded men.
Cool Cookie, if I ever get over Gothic Overload (maybe by next summer?) I would like to work on one of those Gothic MadLibs your genius envisioned, where you can change the name of the wyck, moor and vicar to suit the mood of the also interchangeable cover art. (PS You were the Star Pupil)
Cookie, you must LOVE Prince Harry! I loved when the tabs called him "Harry Pothead."
Lily, if you think you're going top blogging here, you have another thing coming.
Chin: Thank you for inspiring the best comment ever: "I love your blue octopuses."
Well, I'm going to have to change my whole persona if I switch from blogging about Gothic Romance to, say, Inappropriate 70s T-Shirt slogans. Or at least get a new avatar picture.
