I remember him sitting at "his" table (table near the bar, with perfect view of the football games on the tv) alone on Sunday brunch times at the Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset Strip. You pretty much had to walk by the table to exit the dining room, and if you acknowledged him as you passed, he would give you a quick smile and tip of the head.
It always made me feel really special.
